Towards the Glacial Obsolescence of Raised Floor in Large Data Centers

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

In 2003, APC published a well written white paper challenging the suitability of raised floor for the data center. Has raised floor diminished in use in the intervening time period? I haven’t found hard evidence either way. Anecdotally, I’d have to say any progress in this area is measured using a glacial scale.
Raised floor isn’t [...]

Strataspace is betting that the advantages of bunker data centers will attract customers. These bunkers fit a certain type of need and may well represent the ultimate business continuity strategy.
Back in 2001, a Michigan Company called Underground Secure Data Center (USDCO) tried the same thing in a gypsum mine. Two years later the company was [...]

The Underbelly of the Trade Press

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

Alan Shimel, the Chief Strategy Office at StillSecure, exposes a questionable practice at a Trade Press Magazine. The problem, however, is that this isn’t limited to the security vendor space. Combat Fishing at the Russian River

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

As soon as I saw the Feld Thoughts post title, my own Combat Fishing experience on the Russian River in Alaska snapped past me just like the hooks that become projectiles. Read this 2001 account that is still pretty accurate today. A warning, though, it’s all about Sockeye Salmon fishing and the reason people [...]

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

Brad Feld and friends are on a mission to prove that thesis. They’ve launched TechStars and you don’t have much time to submit your application. You don’t need a business plan (although I suspect if you had one it wouldn’t hurt you), just answer 28 questions and actively participate in this summer’s Boulder boot camp [...]

Google announced they are building a $600 million data center facility in North Carolina and Microsoft announced a $550 million dollar data center build in San Antonio. Subsidies played a role in both deals.
Where is the next intersection of cheap power and large amounts of bandwidth?
While Colorado has a unique offering in Longmont that made [...]
