The Data Center Arm’s Race Continues

January 21st, 2007

Google announced they are building a $600 million data center facility in North Carolina and Microsoft announced a $550 million dollar data center build in San Antonio. Subsidies played a role in both deals.

Where is the next intersection of cheap power and large amounts of bandwidth?

While Colorado has a unique offering in Longmont that made it the choice of American Honda (with others in the works), I suspect Lloyd Taylor, Google’s Director of Global Operations isn’t ruling out Wyoming with its cheap power, cheap land prices, and fiber running along the Interstate.

On interesting analysis of Google’s data centers, and fiber purchases can be found in Robert X. Cringley’s recent post.
